  Shape Memory Alloys

In order to leverage more than sixty years of core competencies in vacuum metallurgy and to serve new emerging markets such as medical devices and innovative compact actuators, in 2001 SAES Getters Group started in-house development of Nitinol material and of a thin-diameter Nitinol wire for automotive applications. While accumulating in-house technical expertise and achieving initial commercial success, in 2006 SAES Getters Group acquired 50% of Memory Metalle GmbH (now Memry GmbH), located in Germany, in order to establish an entry point into the European medical device market. At the beginning of 2008, SAES Getters Group became one of the largest worldwide Nitinol suppliers through the acquisition of Nitinol production assets in New Hartford, NY (USA), from Special Metals Corporation (SSM); the creation of SAES Smart Materials in New Hartford confirmed the worldwide technical, production, quality and commercial leadership in the supply of Nitinol mill products.

The acquisition of Memry Corporation in September of 2008 expanded and completed the Nitinol product offerings of the SAES Getters Group, including mill products, semi-finished products (wires, tubes, strips, sheets) and highly engineered components manufactured through the most advanced technologies.
The direct access to the worldwide highest-quality Nitinol material through SAES Smart Materials, more than twenty-five years of experience in manufacturing of medical devices such as stents by SAES Memry, and significant continuous investments in R&D and advanced production technologies uniquely positions the SAES Getters Group as a worldwide technological and commercial leader of medical and industrial applications of Nitinol. Moreover, the direct presence in all geographical regions ensures a constant customer relationship and prompt follow-up in product development.
The Nitinol business is at the core of the SAES Getters Group focus and is constantly expanding to meet the growing needs of the medical device industry and to develop innovative solutions for industrial markets such as automotive and consumer electronics.
