Shape Memory Alloys/Nitinol
Shape memory alloys (SMA)/Nitinol are active, “smart” materials that, after being severely deformed, can exhibit the fascinating and unusual property of remembering their original shape i.e. recovering of the initial geometry by heating (shape memory) or simply by unloading (superelasticity).
A deep understanding of the complicated mechanisms occurring in these materials and the factors affecting the functional properties along with the identification of the process-microstructure-properties relationships is the key for continuous quality improvements, for designing new materials on a theoretical level and for modeling new components.
