Materials Science

Material science investigates the relationship between the structure of materials at the microscopic, molecular or atomic scales and their macroscopic properties.

More practically, materials science correlates the desired properties and performance of a material in a certain application to the structure of the atoms and phases in that material through characterization.

Materials Science encompasses various classes of materials. SAES is mainly focused on metals, advanced inorganic materials, polymer-matrix composites and thin metal films. The interdisciplinary field called Nanotechnology also belongs to Materials Science.

Design of new materials is performed by SAES through systematic function analysis, statistical regression of formulations databases as well as through ab-initio quantum mechanical methods.

CHARACTERIZATION

The characterization of bulk and surface properties of materials is performed through a very wide variety of tools available at the Corporate R&D, including:

  • Atomic Emission and Absorption Spectroscopy,
  • Infrared and Raman Vibrational Spectroscopy,
  • Gas Chromatography,
  • X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy,
  • Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy,
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy,
  • Atomic Force Microscopy,
  • Micro-calorimetry,
  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Thermo Gravimetry,
  • X-Ray Diffraction, etc.

Functional characterization, aimed at the measurement of chemical physical properties such as capture and release kinetics, sorption capacity, etc. or at the measurement of mechanical properties, rheological properties, optical properties, etc. is both performed with state-of-the art tools available on the market and with a range of special proprietary tools, designed and built by the Engineering Department of the Corporate R&D.
